Setting The Scene

            This is AU's second game of the season and their first since last Tuesday. The Eagles are 1-0 – they defeated Oberlin, 72-47. Urbana is 1-3. This is the home opener for the Blue Knights.

About the Blue Knights (1-3)

            Urbana has suffered losses to a pair of nationally ranked teams – top-ranked West Liberty (105-66) and 12th-ranked Southern Indiana (54-53). The other setback came to Kentucky Wesleyan (88-65). Urbana owns a 62-50 win over Holy Family…Urbana's leading scorer is 6-0, 180-pound junior guard Danny Goins, who averages 14.5 ppg., and 4.5 rpg…Armond Battle, a 6-6, 210-pound senior guard, averages 13.8 ppg. Battle scored 19 points against Kentucky Wesleyan and 17 against Southern Indiana….Casey Baker, a 6-4, 200-pound sophomore guard-forward, is bringing down a team-high 7.3 rpg…head coach Jeff Porter is in his fifth year.

About the Eagles (1-0)

            In the win over Oberlin, senior forward Evan Yates (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) had 18 points and 10 rebounds…sophomore forward Paul Honigford (Sugarcreek, Ohio/Garaway) scored 14 points in 16 minutes off the bench. Honigford connected on 4-of-5 three-point attempts…junior forward Will Evans (Lexington, Ky./Christian Academy) scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds…in the second half against Oberlin, AU shot 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from three-point range…AU had a 28-10 edge in points in the paint and rolled up a 27-7 edge in points off of turnovers. The Eagles forced 20 turnovers and gave the ball away just nine times.                   

Eagles and Blue Knights

            Last year at Kates Gymnasium, the Eagles defeated Urbana, 71-56. Yates had 21 points and 12 boards and the Eagles had a 40-12 advantage in points in the paint.  In 2010-11, Ashland defeated the Blue Knights, 84-68, at Urbana. AU leads the all-time series, 5-0.

Up Next

            AU opens GLIAC play on Thursday, Nov. 29 (5:30 p.m.) against Grand Valley State at Kates Gymnasium. AU was picked third in the GLIAC South Division. The Lakers were predicted to finish fifth in the GLIAC North.
