Schaly Named G-MAC Coach Of The Year, Five Eagles Earn All-League Honors

Ashland University head baseball coach John Schaly has been named a conference Coach of the Year before.

What he hadn't been selected as was Great Midwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year – until now.

The 2024 Great Midwest baseball season awards were released on Wednesday (May 8) afternoon, and the No. 20-ranked Eagles' headliner was Schaly, who guided them to their first G-MAC regular-season championship this spring. Schaly previously had been lauded as Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year seven times (1999, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2015 and 2019).

Ashland is 38-11 through the regular season, and will begin Great Midwest Tournament play on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio, vs. Kentucky Wesleyan (17-30).

In addition to Schaly, five Eagles earned spots on their respective All-Great Midwest teams:
  • Junior third baseman Jeremiah Cangelosi is an all-league first teamer after hitting .379 with 43 runs scored, 10 doubles, a triple, two home runs, 45 RBIs and nine stolen bases during the regular season.
  • Junior left-handed pitcher Marshall Leishman also is on the first team following a regular year in which he was 9-0 with a 3.45 earned-run average, 77 strikeouts in 73 innings, and opponents hitting .239 against him.
  • Junior center fielder Cam Miller earned first-team laurels after leading AU with a .383 batting average during the regular season, and adding 59 runs scored, 15 doubles, four triples, a home run, 34 RBIs and 17 stolen bases.
