Box Score BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Junior forward Evan Yates (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) recorded his 14th double-double of the season and the 20th of his career, but the AU men's basketball team fell, 87-66, to GLIAC North-leading Ferris State on Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon.
Yates had game-highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles, Ferris State rained 11 3-pointers in its home gym to defeat the short-handed Eagles. Yates also connected on 13-of-13 free throws to set a career high.
Ashland (13-10, 8-8 GLIAC) played without two wing players on Saturday as sophomore Jordan Berlin (Wilmington, Ohio) and freshman T.J. Riggs (Bloomington, Ill.) were missing with injuries.
The Eagles led, 10-9, after a 3-pointer by senior Antoine Childs (Beaver Falls, Pa./Western Carolina), but Ferris State (15-7, 12-3 GLIAC) buried four straight 3-pointers to go on a 12-0 run to make it 21-10.
AU never got back in the game after trailing, 48-27, at halftime.
Kenny Brown was one of four players in double figures for the Bulldogs, scoring a team-high 24 points. Dontae Molden was 6-for-9 from 3-point range and finished with 20 points. Daniel Sutherlin and Jerrell Sanders had 16 and 14 points, respectively.
As a team, the Bulldogs shot 50.7 percent (34-for-67) from the field and 42.3 percent (11-for-26) from 3-point range. The Eagles hit just five 3-pointers and shot 41.8 percent (23-for-55) from the field.
Yates was the only player in double figures for the Eagles. Sophomore Will Evans (Lexington, Ky./Christian Academy) scored eight points and pulled down eight boards and Childs also had eight points off the bench. Freshman guard Cole Krizancic (Mentor, Ohio) scored seven points off the bench.
The Eagles return to Kates Gymnasium on Thursday (Feb. 16) to host Michigan Tech at 7:30 p.m.
