There was a lot of "earned and deserved" on Sunday (Feb. 28) for Ashland University's men's and women's indoor track and field teams on the second and final day of the 2021 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Saginaw Valley State University.
Â
To no one's surprise, the biggest performances – in quality and volume – came from senior
Trevor Bassitt. Bassitt broke two of his own school records in earning GLIAC titles. In the men's 200 dash, he won in 20.40 seconds, beating his own school record by 0.40 seconds and becoming the best in the event in D-II history by 0.27 seconds. In the 60 hurdles, Bassitt's new PR was 7.67 seconds, and he won by 0.31 seconds.
Â
In the final event of the Championships, the men's 4x400-meter relay, Bassitt anchored a quartet which included juniors
Tim Rumas and
Keshun Jones, and senior
Channing Phillips – a quartet which won in 3:08.23, set a new school record, and turned in the second-best time in NCAA Division II indoor history.
Â
Bassitt also won the men's 60 dash with an improved provisional nationals time of 6.72 seconds.
Â
Phillips won the 400 dash with an improved provisional time of 47.65 seconds, senior
Travis Moore took the men's heptathlon with an improved provisional point total of 5,327, and senior
Ian Johnson was victorious in the men's 800 run, improving his provisional nationals standing at 1:51.86.
Â
On the women's side, junior
Elizabeth Weimer won a conference crown in the shot put, improving upon her provisional mark at 14.32 meters/46-feet-11¾.
Â
Ashland's men were the team runner-up with 172 points, behind champion Grand Valley State (249) and well ahead of third-place Northwood (63.5). The Eagle women were third with 97.5 team points, trailing winner GVSU (255.33) and second-place Saginaw Valley State (138.5).
