To begin a scheduled five doubleheaders in a six-day span, Ashland University's softball team swept Ferris State, 10-7 in eight innings and 13-0 in five innings, on Tuesday (April 17) in Livonia, Mich.
The Eagles move back above the .500 mark overall (15-13), and back to the .500 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (5-5). Lost in the fact that Ashland has had to rearrange its schedule multiple times due to weather is the Eagles' 9-5 record since coming back home from the annual Florida spring trip.
The Bulldogs are 8-24, 2-14.
In Game 1, Ashland trailed 6-5 after five innings and 7-6 after six innings, but tied the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI groundout off the bat of sophomore catcher Cassie Haight. The Eagles then scored three times in the top of the eighth, and the game-winning run came across on an RBI fielder's choice from sophomore shortstop Bree Gill.
Gill was 3-for-4 with a double, home run (her first career), four RBIs and two runs scored, while junior third baseman Paige Summers was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored. Sophomore second baseman Camille Pollutro and junior center fielder Erika Farst each had two of AU's 12 hits, and Haight drove in two runs.
Senior pitcher Paige McMenemy (7-5) came in to get the win in relief, going four innings, allowing four hits, a run and five walks, and striking out four.
The nightcap saw Ashland tie for the most runs it has scored in a game in 2018. Pollutro was 3-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and three runs scored; junior first baseman Kylie Asmus was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored, Summers was 2-for-2 with a homer, three RBIs and four runs scored; junior right fielder Halle Dorko had a double and four RBIs, and junior designated player Katie Manahan was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Junior pitcher Hannah Stroe (5-6) authored a five-inning, three-hit shutout. Stroe struck out five and walked one in improving to 4-2 since returning north.
UP NEXT: A scheduled GLIAC twinbill on Wednesday (April 18) at 4:30 p.m. at Purdue Northwest (18-17, 8-10) has been postponed to Thursday (April 19) at 3 p.m.
