Eagles Split Road Doubleheader Against Ursuline, Take Game Two, 7-2

Ashland Softball Remains in Contention For a Top Spot in the G-MAC Standings

A cold day in Pepperpike, Ohio, wasn't too kind to the bats.

On Sunday, April 19, the Ashland University softball team traveled to the campus of Ursuline College to take on the Arrows, dropping game one, 3-0, before responding and winning game two, 7-2. The results move the Eagles' record on the season to 26-13 overall and 14-5 in conference play.

In game one, the Eagles only recorded six hits.

They came close to scoring runs in the top of the second, third and fourth, but with runners in scoring position, weren't able to make anything happen.

Eventually, after a fairly bland day at the plate, the Arrows ended up taking the game's first runs in the bottom of the sixth. They scored three off a home run from Destiny Ruggiero.

The loss was given to Delaney Liss, who, outside of the home run, hadn't allowed much all game long. She finished with four strikeouts.

With hopes of bouncing back and forgetting about the first game, Ashland came out quickly in game two.

The Eagles scored in the top of the second inning with a Cassidy Shaffer double leading the way. She was then scored on a Delaney Keith flyout.

In the top of the third, four more runs were scored as Ashley Veldheer, Delaney Maynard, Shaffer and Kate Kujawski were all able to cross home plate. The team had five knocks in total, with singles from Raelyn Koesters and Maynard, and doubles from Veldheer, Shaffer and Kujawski.

The Eagles would go on to score two more runs, allowing two in the process.

When the bottom of the seventh came to a close, the Eagles had won, 7-2.

On the mound, Sophia Smithnosky earned the win with seven innings pitched, giving up seven hits, two earned runs and two walks, striking out three along the way.

The Eagles now turn their attention to tomorrow, Monday, April 20, when they will take on the University of Findlay Oilers to finish a previously weather-postponed matchup. The two sides will clash at 3:00 p.m. EST.
