Box Score 2 Ashland University's baseball team split a home Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Walsh on Saturday (April 18), winning 8-2 and losing 6-3.
The Eagles are 26-10 overall, 15-5 in the GLIAC and 11-1 in the GLIAC South Division, and continue to lead the South. The Cavaliers are 16-20/9-13/6-8.
In Game 1, junior pitcher Jake Baldwin authored a complete-game one-hitter to improve to 7-0. He allowed two unearned runs and two walks while striking out four.
The Eagles had 12 hits in the opener, including three from senior second baseman Stephen James and two each from junior first baseman Mackenzie Hampshire, junior designated hitter Blake Bellman and senior left fielder Kyle Brooks. Brooks drove in three runs, and Bellman and junior third baseman Mike Lewandowski each had two RBIs.
In the nightcap, Ashland was ahead 2-1 after three innings, but surrendered single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh and two more in the eighth.
Bellman, Brooks, sophomore catcher Adam Vasil and junior center fielder Nick Edwards each had two of AU's nine hits. Junior pitcher Art Warren allowed four hits and one earned run in five innings.
Prior to Saturday's games, Ashland head coach John Schaly was honored for earning his 1,000th collegiate victory on March 1. Director of Athletics Al King made a presentation to Schaly with members of his family on the field.
Between games, the AU 1995 College World Series team was honored. Sixteen members of that team were on hand.
The Eagles, ranked No. 20 in Division II, and Cavaliers will play two more games on Sunday (April 19), with the start time moved up to noon from 1 p.m.
