Eagle Men Fall 66-60 At Tiffin

Box Score

Ashland University's men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon at Tiffin after a 66-60 loss.

The Eagles are 14-6 overall and 8-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and still are two games in front of Walsh, Malone and Findlay in first place in the GLIAC South Division.

The Dragons improve to 7-14, 3-11, and broke a four-game losing streak.

Sophomore forward Jett Speelman scored a career-high 18 points off the bench, and now has 61 points in the last five games. Speelman was 12-of-13 from the free-throw line on Saturday.

Sophomore guard Boo Osborne scored 12 points.

Ashland was 18-of-21 (85.7 percent) from the free-throw line in the loss, and the Eagles are 102-for-124 (82.3 percent) from the charity stripe over the last five games.

The Eagles scored 16 points on 13 Tiffin turnovers, had a decided 30-7 advantage in bench scoring.

Ashland trailed 11-1 and 19-5 to begin the game, but the Eagles chipped away to cut their deficit to 28-27 with 1:19 left until halftime on an Osborne 3-pointer. The Dragons scored on a layup at the buzzer to take a 30-27 advantage into the locker room.

In the first seven minutes of the second half, Ashland outscored Tiffin, 15-6, to take a 42-36 lead. The Eagles' gap was upped to 49-42 after an old-fashioned 3-point play from senior Brook Turson at the 9:24 mark, but the Dragons wouldn't go away.

Over the next seven minutes, Tiffin went on a 16-5 run and claimed a 58-54 lead, and never again trailed.

The Eagles will conclude their three-games-in-five-days stretch Monday (Feb. 2) at 7:30 p.m. against Lake Erie at Kates Gymnasium.

NOTES: Osborne has scored 46 points and is 14-for-14 from the foul line in the last five games…Saturday marked the fourth time in the last five games, and the sixth time this season, Ashland has made at least 80 percent of its free throws in a game…The 66 points ties for the fewest allowed by the Eagles in a loss in 2014-15.
