Pitchers Hold The Upper Hand In Ashland-Lake Erie Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Pitching dominated the action on Wednesday (Apr. 3) as Ashland and Lake Erie split a GLIAC baseball doubleheader in Painesville, Ohio.

The Storm won the opener, 2-1 and the 14th-ranked Eagles took the second game, 3-0. AU is 19-7, 8-3 in conference play. LEC is 7-17 and 4-7.

In the opener, AU got an exceptional pitching performance from sophomore Vince Frate (North Royalton, Ohio). Frate (1-2) went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits. All the Storm's runs came on a two-run homer by Patrick Kilway in the third inning.

The Lake Erie tandem of Russ Hogue and Heath Kelley limited the Eagles to three hits. First baseman Tyler Gray (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) doubled to drive in Austin Erb (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) in the third inning for AU's lone run.

Hogue (1-2) pitched the first six innings and allowed a run on three hits. He walked two and struck out two. Kelley pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his first save of the season.

In the second game, Ashland scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings. The first run scored on an error and the second run came home courtesy of a bunt single by shortstop Austin Walts (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele). Tyler Bires (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) drilled a solo homer in the fifth.

Jake Baldwin (Madison Heights, Mich./Lamphere) pitched the first 5.1 innings and got the win. He's 2-0. Baldwin allowed four hits, walked three and struck out four. Eric Vaughan (Delta, Ohio/Owens C.C.), a member of the starting rotation, pitched the final 1.2 innings. He didn't allow a hit and picked up his first save of the year.

Brad Raley pitched a complete game for LEC. Only one of the three runs he allowed as earned. Raley allowed six hits.

Ashland will be home this weekend (Apr.6-7) for a three-game series with Hillsdale.
