Ashland Baseball Takes Game 1 of Series Against Thomas More in Extra Innings

The Eagles are Now Eight Games Above .500

A win on Friday afternoon put the Eagles eight games above .500.

But it wasn't an easy task to get the job done.

On Friday, March 27, the Ashland University baseball team travelled south to Crestview Hills, Ky., downing the Thomas More Saints, 6-5, in extra innings baseball. The Eagles' win bounces the team's record forward to 16-8 on the year, all while maintaining a strong 6-3 record in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play.

As they have been able to recently, Ashland jumped out to a quick start, scoring two runs in the first inning of action before tacking on two more in the second. While it looked like they were going to practically run away with the victory, Thomas More was able to bring the game back into reach.

Thomas More responded in the middle innings, scoring once in the third before tying the game with a three-run fourth inning to make it 4–4.

From there, both teams were held scoreless through the ninth, forcing extra innings.

After neither team was able to find a run in the 10th inning of action, the Eagles were the team to open up the scoring in extra innings, breaking through with a two-run home run from the bat of Drew Stevens.

The Saints were able to answer with a run in the bottom half and put the tying run on base, but Ashland held on to secure the 6–5 victory.

Stevens led the way offensively with three RBI, while Nate King collected three hits.

On the mound, David Smith provided a strong relief outing, tossing five scoreless innings to keep Ashland in the game after Thomas More initially brought the game back.

With momentum continuing to surge, the Eagles will look to extend the team's winning streak to three games as they take on the Saints yet again on Saturday, March 28. The two sides will play in a doubleheader yet again in Kentucky, with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. EST.
