It's been said that sports is the best form of reality television. It is so unpredictable. Sometimes, truth can be stranger than fiction.
Last Thursday, the AU men's soccer team bumped off unbeaten and second-ranked Gannon, 3-1. AU got stronger as the game went on and was exceptional in every phase of the game.
Three days later – on Sunday (Oct. 7) at Walsh – those same Eagles were shocked by three goals in the game's first 32 minutes and lost to the Cavaliers, 5-3.
Walsh is 3-8, 3-6 in GLIAC action. Ashland is 7-3-1 and 5-3 in conference play.
Chris Lynch had a pair of goals for Walsh and Broc Sutek and Chad Dickerhoof had a goal and an assist each. Lynch's first goal of the day came at 31:36 off of a free kick. Dickerhoof got the assist and that score put the Eagles behind, 3-0.
AU's Keiichi Nguyen (Wellington, New Zealand), who had three goals in the Gannon game, scored on a feed from Adam Mitchell (Brighton, England/Dorothy Stringer) at 41:20 to cut the margin to 3-1. But the Cavaliers scored the game's next two goals and led, 5-1. The first of those scores came at 41:20. Jordan Semple scored his second goal of the season to put Walsh in front, 4-1 at the break.
Ashland finally retaliated with a goal by Zaan Janse (Wellington, New Zealand/Roanoke College) at 81:47. Max Rohda (Powell, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) scored the final Ashland goal at 86:57.
The Eagles' next game will be at Ohio Dominican on Friday (Oct. 12, 7 p.m.).
