AU Men Fall Short in 2-1 Loss at Lake Erie

ASHLAND, Ohio – For the second straight game, the AU men's soccer team trailed 1-0 at halftime and tied the game in the second half. Unfortunately, the result was the same as their last game for the Eagles as Lake Erie came away with a 2-1 in Painesville, Ohio, on Sunday (Oct. 9) afternoon.

Senior Kenny Hewitt (London, England/Longhill) tied the game at 1-1 at the 80:09 mark from five yards out on an assist from senior J.P. Lytle (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster/Valparaiso). It was Hewitt's second goal of the season and Lytle's first assist.

Less than four minutes later, Willy Cognee's goal for Lake Erie lifted the Storm to the win.

Last Sunday (Oct. 2), the Eagles trailed Saginaw Valley State at halftime before Hewitt's goal tied the game. The Eagles dropped that game, 2-1, also.

LEC's Cory Bucur scored an unassisted goal from 10 yards out in the 32nd minute to give the Storm (5-5-2, 3-2-2 GLIAC) the lead.

The Eagles (2-8-2, 1-5-1 GLIAC) pounded at Lake Erie's goal for much of the second half, out-shooting the Storm, 8-5, in the period. Ricky Carreira finished with four saves for the Storm. Junior goalkeepers Justin Nolan (Medina, Ohio/Highland) and Kurt Innes (Vermilion, Ohio) combined for one save as the Storm put just three shots on goal.

AU led in shots, 12-11, overall and on corner kicks, 6-4.

The Eagles return home on Friday (Oct. 14) after spending exactly one month on the road. AU hosts GLIAC foe Northwood at 7:30 p.m. in the second half of a soccer doubleheader with the women's team at Ferguson Field.
