Eagles Suffer First Loss at Edinboro

Box Score

ASHLAND, Ohio – After opening the season with three straight wins, the AU men's basketball team was sent to its first loss, 64-59, in a nonconference game at Edinboro on Sunday (Nov. 28) afternoon.

The Eagles (3-1) fell behind early, 11-2, but went on a 12-2 run to take a 14-13 advantage after a three-pointer by senior forward Kale Richardson (Carroll, Ohio/Bloom-Carroll) with 11:06 left in the first half.

The game was game a scrap from there as neither team led by more than six points the rest of the way.  The game featured 10 ties and the Eagles did not lead again until 6:19 remained in the second half when junior center Cole Moore (Lake Orion, Mich.) converted a three-point play.

Freshman guard DaWuan Thomas (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) got a steal on the next possession and Justin Garris (Ledgewood, N.J./NJIT) finished the fast-break with a slam to give the Eagles a 54-51 lead.

It would be the last lead for Ashland, which was on the wrong end of a 13-5 run that ended the game.

Richardson finished with a team-high 15 points and pulled down six boards. Moore had 13 points in 19 minutes off the bench, shooting 5-for-5 from the field.

The Eagles shot just 36 percent (20-for-55) from the field in the game, but limited the Fighting Scots to a 41 percent (22-for-54) mark. Edinboro out-classed Ashland on the glass, holding a 38-31 advantage.

The Scots (3-1) had three scorers in double figures, led by Danny Walsh, who had 17 with four boards and four assists. Byron Knight had 16 points and 14 rebounds and Cory Somerville had eight boards, four blocks and two steals.

AU opens GLIAC play on Thursday (Dec. 2) night at Hillsdale at 6 p.m.
