The first day of the three-day 2022 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships was contested on Wednesday (May 4) in Owensboro, Ky., and the Eagle hammer throwers got both teams off to a good start.

WHAT HAPPENED
- The women's hammer throw saw AU's first conference champion of the week, as freshman Kelsey Kinsley won at 57.39 meters/188-feet-3. That distance also was an improved provisional mark for the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, May 26-28 in Allendale, Mich.
- Also placing and earning points were senior Carrol Pauley (third, 53.64 meters/176-feet-0), freshman Kaylyn Barnette (fourth, 52.20 meters/171-feet-3), and senior Taylor Kroll (eighth, 48.55 meters/159-feet-3).
- In the men's hammer throw, senior Brent Fairbanks took second with an improved provisional distance of 63.18 meters/207-feet-3. Sophomore Noah Koch was eighth (55.60 meters/182-feet-5).
- Freshman Sarah Masuoka was sixth in the women's pole vault at 3.69 meters/12-feet-1¼, and senior Steven Kapes finished sixth in the men's 10,000-meter run in 31:11.34.
- Through three scored events on the women's side, Ashland is second with 25 points, trailing only Findlay (38.5). Through two scored events on the women's side, the Eagles are third with 12 points, behind Findlay (29) and Walsh (23).
