GLIAC Records Fall As Eagle Men Take Second, Women Third At Championships

Bassitt now fourth-best men's 400 hurdler in D-II outdoor history

Ashland University's No. 2-ranked men's outdoor track and field teams set three new Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships records on Friday (May 7), finishing in second place as a team and collecting five league titles in its final meet before heading to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in 2021-22.
 
Senior Trevor Bassitt had the biggest day, capped by the men's 400-meter hurdles. In winning in 49.04 seconds, Bassitt not only set a new league mark, beat his own school record and improved upon his previous automatic mark for outdoor nationals, he now is tied for the fourth-best NCAA Division II mark all-time in the event, and is No. 2 this season outdoors for any American-born runner.
 
Bassitt also won and set a new GLIAC standard in the men's 110 hurdles (13.61 seconds), and was the anchor of the winning and GLIAC-record-setting men's 4x100 relay (40.26 seconds), which also featured juniors Tim Rumas and Travis Marx, and freshman Doniven Jackson.
 
Ashland also had wins in the men's 4x400 relay in 3:10.20 (sophomore Brayden Chaney, Marx, senior Channing Phillips and Bassitt), and from Phillips in the men's 400 dash in 47.56 seconds.
 
The Eagle men earned 216.5 team points, good for a second-place finish. Grand Valley State won with 300.5 points, and host Davenport took third (68.5). On the women's side, the Lakers won with 248 points, Saginaw Valley State was second (183), and the Eagles third (122.5).
 
SECOND PLACE – Sophomore Ethan Tabor in the men's triple jump (13.61 meters/44-feet-8), Marx in the men's 100 dash (10.74 seconds), senior Ellie Jindra in the women's high jump (1.68 meters/5-feet-6), junior Makayla Pop in the women's discus throw (45.04 meters/147-feet-9), Rumas in the men's 200 dash (21.33), sophomore Miyuki Sugiyama in the women's triple jump (11.17 meters/36-feet-7¾), and freshman Noah Koch in the men's discus throw (53.86 meters/176-feet-8).
 
THIRD PLACE – Senior Jared Ryder in the men's triple jump (13.38 meters/43-feet-10¾), Jackson in the men's 100 dash (10.79 seconds), Sugiyama in the women's high jump (1.63 meters/5-feet-4¼), senior Rachel Miller in the women's 400 hurdles (1:00.71, improved provisional), Marx in the men's 200 dash (21.44 seconds), freshman Ashleigh Bowker in the women's 100 hurdles (14.55 seconds), junior Cheyanne Davis in the women's 400 dash (57.71 seconds), senior Steven Kapes in the men's 5,000 run (14:38.60), senior Alex Hill in the men's discus throw (53.60 meters/175-feet-10), sophomore Wyatt Cory in the men's pole vault (4.57 meters/15-feet-0), the women's 4x100 relay team of Davis, Miller, sophomore Morgan Dennis and freshman Alena Williams (47.22 seconds), and the women's 4x400 relay squad of Davis, Miller, freshman Elizabeth Adams and freshman McKenna Woodruff (3:58.19).
 
FOURTH PLACE – Junior Storm Elsesser in the men's triple jump (12.92 meters/42-feet-4¾), senior Ian Johnson in the men's 800 run (1:52.24), junior Cameron Shifflet in the men's 400 hurdles (53.38 seconds), sophomore Macy Creamer in the women's 400 hurdles (1:05.08), junior Cassandra Ponzi in the women's 800 run (2:16.72), Williams in the women's 100 dash (12.19 seconds), and junior Elizabeth Weimer in the women's shot put (13.85 meters/45-feet-5¼).
 
FIFTH PLACE – Chaney in the men's 400 dash (49.75 seconds) and freshman Trent Kauffman in the men's pole vault (4.42 meters/14-feet-6).
 
SEVENTH PLACE – Freshman Bobby Crenshaw in the men's 400 dash (50.61 seconds) and Adams in the women's 400 dash (1:00.15).
 
EIGHTH PLACE – Tabor in the men's 110 hurdles (15.08 seconds), freshman Cole LaRoche in the men's shot put (16.08 meters/52-feet-9¼), sophomore Nick Ponzi in the men's 800 run (1:56.93), freshman Kira Tavanello in the women's discus throw (39.90 meters/130-feet-11), junior Abby Moser in the women's 1,500 run (4:54.70), and freshman Megan Rider in the women's triple jump (9.92 meters/32-feet-6½).
 
Select Eagles will compete in last-chance meets in the coming days. Qualifiers will compete at the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, May 27-29 at Grand Valley State.
