The Ashland University community joins with family and friends in mourning the recent passing of former men's basketball player and All-American
Bill Higgins.
Higgins, a Dayton native and Dunbar High School star, played three seasons with the Eagles from 1971-74 and ranks fourth on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,746 points. He was named an All-American in 1972 and 1973 and still holds the program record with 28 points per game in 1973-74,
Bill "The Thrill" Higgins was selected in the seventh round of the NBA Draft by the New Orleans Jazz, but eventually played for the Virginia Squires in the American Basketball Association.
While with the Eagles, Ashland went 48-27 and Higgins is one of just three players in program history to have scored 500 points in three seasons.
After his death,
the Dayton Daily-News wrote an extensive piece about Higgins, among the greatest players ever produced in the city.
