On Saturday (March 5) afternoon in Florida, Ashland University's baseball team defeated No. 20-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato, 9-2, to improve to 3-3 on the young 2017 season.
Tied at 2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Eagles scored five times in the seventh and twice more in the eighth. The eventual game-winning run came on a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Brad Hartman.
Sophomore right-handers Chris Slavik and Sam Rice combined for the solid pitching effort on Saturday. Slavik started and allowed two hits, one run (none earned) and two walks while striking out three in five innings, while Rice got the relief win by whiffing five and allowing two hits, a run and a walk in four frames.
In Ashland's 12-hit attack, five players had two hits each – senior outfielder Carsten Dembeck (2-for-3), junior second baseman J.P. Sorma (2-for-5, two runs scored), freshman outfielder Vince Vanata (2-for-2, double, RBI), freshman third baseman Evan Lee (2-for-3, double) and freshman catcher Alex Laikos (2-for-3, double).
