THE TURNING POINT: Wednesday's winning goal was scored by Walsh senior forward Bailey Moody in the 73rd minute. Moody scored both Cavalier goals in the win.
STAT OF THE DAY: Ashland sophomore forward Tomas Cordeiro scored his team-leading third goal of the season in the 52nd minute to tie the game at 1.
In a tightly-packed Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer standings table, every game counts.
On Wednesday (Sept. 28) night at Ferguson Field, Ashland University's men's soccer team lost a 2-1 decision to Walsh. The Eagles fall to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the GLIAC, while the Cavaliers improve to 4-4-1, 2-4-1.
"We've come a long way in a short time," said Ashland head coach Oliver Slawson. "But that was not good enough. Credit Walsh. They took what we gave them. We've got to look at ourselves and sort some things out."
While the 2016 GLIAC season isn't half over, there is a battle brewing to secure one of the four spots in the conference tournament. The No. 4-8 spots in the league standings are separated by just one game.
The first half of play was controlled by the Cavaliers, who had a 10-3 shot advantage and both of the half's corner kicks. Less than four minutes into the second half, Walsh senior forward Bailey Moody scored his third goal of 2016 unassisted in front of the AU net.
Ashland had a response, however, in the 52nd minute, when sophomore forward Tomas Cordeiro scored his third goal of the campaign on a cross from freshman midfielder C.J. Maynard.
Moody then potted the game-winner in the 73rd minute on a feed from junior midfielder Simon Miller.
Ashland nearly flipped the script on Walsh in the second half with a 10-6 shot advantage. Senior goalkeeper Nick Ciraldo made six saves in the loss.
"It's going to be a turning point," Slawson said. "Because these guys now understand the pride and the passion and the respect that people have for this program, what they need to bring on a daily basis.
"It's one result. It's a bad loss. We've had a lot more positives than negatives this year, and we have to learn from it."
UP NEXT: The start of a four-game road trip on Friday (Sept. 30) at 4 p.m. against Findlay (2-6, 1-5).
