Embarking on its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference road trip of the 2016 season, Ashland University's men's soccer team lost a 3-0 decision at No. 11-ranked Northwood on Friday (Sept. 16) afternoon, after playing the nationally-ranked Timberwolves tight at 1-0 into the game's waning minutes.
The Eagles, after starting the season with back-to-back wins, have lost two in a row and are 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC. The Timberwolves improve to 3-1, 2-1.
Northwood scored the first goal of the game in the 25th minute when Ben Campbell finished a cross into the goal area. The Timberwolves out-shot the Eagles 11-0 in the first half.
Friday's game remained 1-0 until late in the second half, when Eamonn Kelly scored twice in less than three minutes – in the 75th minute on a shot on the far post, and in the 78th minute on a shot chipped over Ashland senior goalkeeper Nick Ciraldo.
The Timberwolves finished with a 20-4 shot advantage. Ciraldo stopped nine shots in the loss.
Ashland has gone 248:10 since scoring its last goal, an unassisted tally by freshman forward Andrew Pearson at home against Northern Michigan on Sept. 9.
UP NEXT: Ashland will finish its three-games-in-five-days stretch on Sunday (Sept. 18) at 2:30 p.m. at Saginaw Valley State (3-2, 1-2), the preseason favorite to win the 2016 GLIAC championship.
