Box Score It was a season of firsts for the Ashland University men's basketball team.
The No. 12-ranked Eagles won their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season Championship and made the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament for the first time in 25 years.
Ashland's run came to an end, however, on Saturday (March 12) in the first round of the Midwest Regional at Wisconsin-Parkside against the Indianapolis Greyhounds, 77-60.
"We did a lot of firsts and I think that's kind of special," said Ashland head coach
John Ellenwood. "I think we just had a bad shooting night."
The Eagles shot 37 percent as a team, just 20-of-54 from the field. The Greyhounds connected on 29 of their 55 shots for 52.7 percent on the day.
Junior
Adrian Cook led the Eagles with 20 points, shooting 6-of-14 from the field.
"I'm really proud of our team," said Cook. "A lot of people didn't think we could do what we did this year."
Cook post-game comments
The Eagles end their season at 25-6 overall.
Ashland also struggled from the 3-point line, only connecting on 4-of-21 attempts (19 percent). That was the Eagles' second-lowest percentage this season.
Junior
Marsalis Hamilton fell one rebound short of a double-double, posting 13 points and nine rebounds in the contest. Junior
Wendell Davis added 11 points and eight helpers.
"It's good that we got here," said Ellenwood. "We learned from this experience and have a lot of guys returning next year."
Indianapolis improves its record to 21-7 and will play the No. 7-seed Ferris State Bulldogs on Sunday (March 13) in Round 2 of the NCAA tournament. The Bulldogs defeated Bellarmine, 100-84, on Saturday.
