Eagle Baseball Rally Falls Short As Spring Trip Continues

Box Score

Ashland University's baseball team has made of habit of late-inning theatrics in the early part of the 2015 season, and the Eagles almost pulled off another comeback on Wednesday (March 4).

Continuing their annual spring trip in Winter Haven, Fla., the Eagles trailed Grand Valley State 5-2 going into the bottom of the ninth, then scored twice and had the winning run on first base with two outs before losing to the Lakers, 5-4 – the same score as the AU-GVSU game on Tuesday (March 3).

Sophomore right fielder Joey Gonzalez was 2-for-3 and scored two runs. The senior double-play tandem of second baseman Stephen James and shortstop Austin Walts each had an RBI.

Senior Vince Frate started and went the first 7 1/3 innings for the Eagles, allowing five hits, four runs and two walks while striking out one. Junior Art Warren pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.

The Eagles (4-3) will play in Auburndale on Thursday (March 5) at 12:30 p.m. against Wheeling Jesuit.
