Box Score Ashland University's men's basketball team saw its 2014-15 season come to an end on Wednesday (March 4) night after a 79-67 loss at Ferris State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal.
The Eagles end the campaign with a 19-10 record and a share of their first-ever GLIAC South Division title. Ashland improved by eight wins from the season prior, the program's best single-season improvement in nearly 30 years.
Wednesday's game was the final one for Eagle senior guards Brook Turson, DaWuan Thomas and Cole Krizancic, and senior forward Paul Honigford.
"I'm proud of our senior class. When those guys came here, we told them we wanted to win a championship, and we did," said Ashland head coach John Ellenwood. "Just some fantastic wins this year, and some fantastic memories. They're outstanding people. They're going to do some great things. They're going to have a bright future."
The Bulldogs move on in the GLIAC Tournament, and improve to 21-8.
Turson scored a team-high 15 points, while sophomore forward Wendell Davis had 13 points, a team-high seven rebounds and four assists.
"Wendell played hard," Ellenwood said of his All-GLIAC First-Team selection. "He had to do a lot for us on both ends. He had an outstanding season, and one he can build on for next year."
Honigford scored 11 points and added three steals off the bench, and sophomore guard Adrian Cook came off the pine to add 10 points.
Ashland trailed 19-18 with 5:24 to go in the first half, but Ferris State ran off 12 unanswered points en route to a 31-20 halftime lead.
"We gave up too many transition points off turnovers in the first half," said Ellenwood. "We got close in the second half, but just couldn't get over the hump."
The Eagles pulled to within two points of the Bulldogs at 49-47 with 8:45 to play on a Honigford 3-pointer, but Ferris State went on another 12-0 run to pull away.
