Box Score Ashland University's men's basketball team accomplished a two-for on Saturday (Nov. 28) night in Erie, Pa. – staying undefeated at 5-0 and winning the 32nd Annual Gary Miller Classic by a 75-59 count over home-standing Gannon (2-3).
The Eagles have started a season with at least five wins in a row for the second consecutive year. Ashland is 21-4 in its last 25 games against non-conference opponents, and has won 13 such games consecutively.
Junior forward Wendell Davis paced AU with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor, and added five rebounds and three assists. In the two games in Erie, Davis ended with 53 points, 16 boards and eight helpers – a line which led to him being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Davis has three games of 20-plus points so far in 2015-16, and with 907 career points, the countdown to his becoming the 24th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark is on.
Freshman guard Nick Bapst, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team, came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points in 22 minutes, while sophomore forward Marsalis Hamilton added 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Junior guards Boo Osborne and Adrian Cook each had four of AU's 15 assists.
Ashland out-rebounded Gannon, 30-23, in the victory.
The Golden Knights had an early 11-10 lead, but the Eagles went on a 13-2 run to go ahead 23-13 with 7:51 left until halftime. AU led 37-26 at the half, and never trailed in the second half.
The Eagles will begin Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Thursday (Dec. 3) at 8 p.m. at Grand Valley State.
