Box Score The Ashland University baseball team put an exclamation point on its spring trip on Saturday (Mar. 8), pounding second-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato, 10-2.
The Mavericks were the national runner-up a year ago and entered this game with a seven-game winning streak. They are 8-2.
The win gives AU an 8-4 record. The Eagles will play a three-game series at Cedarville next weekend.
Sophomore right-hander Alex Smith tamed the Mavericks on six hits over nine innings. He didn't issue a walk and struck out five. Over their final three games in Florida, Ashland pitching allowed three runs.
The Eagles trailed, 2-0, before striking for six runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Eagles collected 17 hits. Kyle Brooks was 4-for-5 and scored two runs. Infielder Mike Lewandowski was 2-for-2 while shortstop Austin Walts, outfielder Mackenzie Hampshire and first baseman Tyler Gray were all 2-for-5. Hampshire and Gray belted doubles. Catch Adam Vasil was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
