ASHLAND, Ohio – As the weather turned cooler at Ferguson Field, so did the AU men's soccer team. The Eagles, who were coming off a 3-1 win over Findlay last weekend, fell to visiting Lake Erie, 2-0, on Wednesday (Sept. 14) night.
The Storm scored once in the first half and put the game away in the 73rd minute to come away with the win that boosted its record to 3-2, 2-1 in GLIAC play. The Eagles fell to 2-2-1, 1-1-1 in the GLIAC.
"With as many opportunities we had, especially with the corner kicks, you've got to come out with something, and we didn't," AU head coach Jon Freeman said.
The Eagles held a 14-8 advantage in shots taken, but Lake Erie put six on frame compared to AU's four.
At the 27:05 mark, the Storm opened the scoring as it came out of their defensive end with a 3-on-2 advantage. Nathan Bias laid the ball off to a Jake Shelton streaking down the left side and Shelton finished from seven yards out.
From there, the Eagles dominated much of the ball, including into the second half.
"I felt like if the game kept going the way it was, we were going to get something," said Freeman.
Against the run of play, the Storm was able to score their second goal. Bias sent a cross to the far post from the left side and Danny Eborall knocked it between the frames.
The Eagles could not muster too much in the way of attack after that point, earning a few corner kicks, but not getting quality opportunities in front of net.
Junior keeper Justin Nolan (Medina, Ohio/Highland) stopped four shots in net.
The Eagles will now hit the road for a month as they start a seven-game road trip on Friday (Sept. 16) at Ohio Dominican. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
