ASHLAND, Ohio – Following singles play Monday (March 7), the AU tennis team trailed Brevard, 4-2, in Hilton Head, S.C.
Normally, singles decide matches with the six matches coming down to the wire to determine a team winner. In Monday's case, the teams played their doubles matches after singles play. Perhaps, the Eagles should lobby to continue this practice.
The Eagles pulled out three wins in doubles play for a 5-4 win over the Tornados in their second match on their spring break trip. AU improved to 4-0 in the spring season that also includes wins over Mercyhurst and Oberlin.
Seniors Alex Ware (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) and Corinne Pasley (Livonia, Mich./Adlaie Stevenson) took their match at second doubles to the brink, but pulled out the 9-7 win over Lindsay Shaeffer and Jen Nyman.
The junior duo of Paige Cooper (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) and Torrie Goudy (Lexington, Ohio) won, 8-4, at first doubles, while sophomore Erika Sullivan (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) and freshman Kira Kotova (Moscow, Russia) staked an 8-5 win at third doubles.
The 3-0 performance in doubles play, overcame a 4-2 deficit in singles play. Sullivan and Kotova won in straight sets from the second and fifth positions, respectively. Ware, at sixth singles, lost her tiebreaker against Elise Labus, 3-6, 6-0, 10-8, in the only three-set match in singles play.
The Eagles continue their spring trip on Tuesday (March 8) against Charleston at 8 a.m.
