Eagles Too Much for Oakland City

Box Score

Coaches often talk about getting a team to buy "all in" to a philosophy. That was not a problem for the AU women's basketball team on Saturday (Nov. 26) against Oakland City on the first day of the 2011 Ashland Holiday Inn Classic.

All 11 AU players who were dressed for the game scored at least one point. Every player had at least one rebound and one assist. All in all, there wasn't much to find fault with as Ashland ran past the Oaks, 98-48.

The Eagles are 3-1 and have a three-game winning streak. They will go for their fourth consecutive win when they host Saint Joseph's on Sunday (Nov. 27, 3 p.m.) on the final day of this event.  In Saturday's first game, Saint Joseph's held off Lake Superior State, 68-60.

Ashland led against Oakland City from start to finish and that allowed head coach Sue Ramsey to cut the minutes of her regulars.  Senior guard Jena Stutzman (Berlin, Ohio/Kent State) played 17 minutes, five in the second half. She finished with 15 points.  Junior forward Kari Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio/Dayton) logged 12 minutes and scored nine points.  AU's leading scorer was freshman forward Delanie Wolf (Minster, Ohio).  The rookie connected on all five of her field goal attempts and was 7-of-8 at the free throw line on the way to 17 points.

Junior guard Kaci Finfrock (West Milton, Ohio/Milton-Union) had a team-leading seven rebounds. She also had 10 points, a team-best five steals and four assists.

The bigger, stronger Eagles led in points in the paint, 38-4 and in points off of turnovers, 33-15.  The visitors had 28 turnovers.  The Eagles shot 52.2 percent (36-of-69) from the field and outrebounded the Oaks, 46-32.  Ashland led at halftime, 52-25.

Oakland City's leading scorer was guard Whitney Malin, who had 15 points.  Guard Chelsea Jones had 12 points and forward Jane Barclay had eight points and eight rebounds.
