Box Score The Ashland University women's basketball team dropped its season-opener Saturday (Nov. 12) at the California (Pa.) Invitational, falling to Minnesota State-Mankato, 63-46.
The Eagles were behind, 28-20 at halftime. The game got away from AU in the early stages of the second half. With 18:49 remaining in regulation, Ashland trailed, 28-23. Over the next 5:20, the Minnesota school went on a 17-4 run and was in front, 45-27 with 13:29 left in the game.
AU struggled to protect the basketball. The Eagles had 30 turnovers and Minnesota State-Mankato had a 19-9 edge in points off of turnovers.
AU senior guard Jena Stutzman (Berlin, Ohio/Kent State) led Ashland with 10 points. She also collected nine rebounds. Junior guard-forward Kari Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio/Dayton) scored nine points and collected a team-high 11 rebounds. All of Daugherty's points came in the second half.
AU also received nine points from junior guard Lindsay Tenyak (Wadsworth, Ohio). Tenyak was 3-for-4 from three-point range. Redshirt sophomore guard-forward Ashley Dorner (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork) had three steals.
Minnesota State-Mankato was led by 6-0 junior forward Ali Wilkinson's 16 points and 10 rebounds. Wilkinson shot 7-of-11 from the floor and had six offensive rebounds. She scored 10 second half points. Jameila Hudnell, a 5-10 junior guard, added 10 points. Laura Weber, a 6-2 senior center, had eight rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocked shots.
Ashland will play Indianapolis on Sunday (Nov. 13, 1 p.m.) in the tournament's consolation game. The Greyhounds lost to host Cal on Saturday, 64-57.
