Schaly Approaching NCAA Division II Career Wins Record

A Look At The Eagle Baseball Head Coach, By The Numbers

In nearly four decades as a collegiate head baseball coach, John Schaly seemingly has done it all.

Ashland University's baseball leader is an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Famer, and by far is the Eagles' all-time leader in wins (958), games coached (1,471) and NCAA Division II College World Series appearances (five).

As 2025 Great Midwest Athletic Conference play begins vs. Walsh at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex this week, Schaly stands at 1,321 career wins, combining his stints at Berry (1988-91), St. Leo (1992-97) and Ashland (1998-current). He is four victories away from passing Southeastern Oklahoma's Mike Metheny (1,324) to become D-II's all-time winningest head baseball coach.

There is a lot more to Schaly's head coaching career, however, than his all-time wins total:

8 – Eight of Schaly's former Ashland players have been inducted into the AU Hall of Fame.

9 – Schaly's Eagle teams have won seven regular-season conference titles (six in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, one in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference), and two GLIAC Tournament championships.

19 – Ashland baseball has made 19 D-II postseason appearances under Schaly's guidance.

19…again – From 1998-2016, for 19 straight seasons, Schaly's AU teams had a winning record in each of those campaigns.

25 – Schaly is 25th in NCAA baseball history at all levels in career wins.

32 – The Eagles score a lot of runs with Schaly leading the team. They scored a program-record 32 runs in a game vs. Parkside in 2021.

38 – This is season No. 38 for Schaly guiding a college baseball team, tied for the 55th in NCAA history at all levels.

38…again – Ashland has won 38 D-II playoff games in Schaly's time leading the program.

40 – Schaly has led 12 of his teams to at least 40 wins in a season, nine of those coming at Ashland.

50.7 – Ashland baseball has been around since 1922, and has 1,889 all-time wins. Schaly as a head coach has accounted for 958 of those wins, or 50.7 percent.

.653 – Schaly's career winning percentage at Ashland.

.707 – For the entire decade of the 2000s, Schaly led the Eagles to a winning percentage of .707 (410-169-2).

2018 – In January of 2018, Schaly was inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame…and has won 232 games since.

2,055 – The number of games for Schaly as a collegiate head coach.

2,759 – Schaly and his father, Don (Marietta 1964-2003), have won a combined 2,759 career games in college. John needs 117 more victories to catch his father (1,438 wins) on the all-time NCAA all-levels list. Early in 2015, the Schalys became the first father-son duo at four-year institutions to each win 1,000 career games.
