In the second of six consecutive games at Ferguson Field, Ashland University's women's lacrosse team came out fast, then finished fast for a 20-12 win over Daemen on Monday (March 10).
The Eagles improve to 3-3 after a season-high-tying goal total, and the Wildcats move to 2-3.
"We have a problem with being complacent," said AU head coach
Lauren Simko. "We get up and we feel really good, and that's something that we've struggled with all year. We have a hard time with the lead.
"As the game went on, they did a really nice job maintaining composure, and kind of got out of a funk and took the game away."
Ashland led 9-0 following the first quarter, but Daemen chipped away at the deficit to the point where it trailed 13-11 early in the fourth quarter. The Eagles, however, ended the game on a 7-1 run.
WANAT'S EARLY CAREER GAME…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
- Freshman midfielder Tori Wanat posted career game bests of seven goals and eight points on Monday.
- "I think it was important for us to hustle back," said Wanat. "They were on a run for a little bit there. It was important for us to stick together. I love the team. They're all so supportive. Coaches are supportive."
- "She had a fabulous game. She's a baller," Simko said. "The best thing about Tori is she's really good everywhere on the field. She's a really good defender, she's really good on the attack."
- Sophomore attacker Ashley Drexler (four goals, one assist) and junior attacker Rachel Crumbacher (two goals, three assists) each had five points.
- Junior goalkeeper Annie Duncan made five saves.
- Ashland out-shot Daemen, 37-25, and the Eagles forced 27 turnovers.
