Softball Splits At Notre Dame College In Non-Conference Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 On Wednesday (April 10), Ashland University's softball team split a doubleheader at Notre Dame College – winning 3-0 and losing 3-2.

The Eagles are 15-18 overall after the non-conference twinbill, and the Falcons are 24-17.

To start Game 1, the Eagles posted a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on back-to-back RBI ground-rule doubles by freshman left fielder Delaney Maynard and junior pitcher Cassidy Shaffer. Ashland added its third run in the top of the third when Shaffer added another RBI double.

Maynard was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two doubles and an RBI – and had hits in seven consecutive at-bats until the seventh inning. Shaffer was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, and was the winning pitcher (3-5), authoring a complete-game four-hit shutout with four strikeouts.

Notre Dame scored first in Game 2, plating a run in the bottom of the first. Ashland, however, took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth when freshman catcher Delaney Keith deposited a two-out two-run single.

After sophomore pitcher Delaney Lis stranded runners at second and third following a leadoff triple in the bottom of the fifth, she stranded Falcon runners at second and third again in the sixth. NDC, however, scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for the split.

  • Keith and freshman shortstop Sophia Smithnosky each had two of AU's six hits in the nightcap.
