It was a successful NCAA Division II Region 3 wrestling tournament for the No. 15-ranked Ashland University grapplers on Saturday (Feb. 25), with four Eagles on their way to the D-II Championships on March 10-11 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Going to nationals as regional champions are redshirt freshman
Nate Barrett at 174 pounds and redshirt junior
Daniel Beemer at 184 pounds. Barrett went 3-0 following a bye – a technical fall and two decisions, including a 4-3 win over West Liberty's Chase Morgan in the first-place match.

Beemer, the No. 4-ranked wrestler in the country at 184, went 4-0 on Saturday, recording two major decisions and a pin in 35 seconds prior to a 3-1 win in the first-place match against West Liberty's Ty McGeary.

Junior
Drew Wiechers finished second at 165 pounds, going 2-1 after a bye with a pin, a major decision, then a loss in the first-place match, 9-8, to Glenville State's Guy Deleonardis.

The pleasant surprise nationals qualifier for AU on Saturday was redshirt freshman 149-pounder
Evan Davis. After a bye, Davis went 3-1, all wins being decisions, including the 10-4 victory over Findlay's Mason Kleinberg in the third-place match.

In the team standings, Ashland finished sixth at regionals with 68 team points. West Liberty won the team title with 137.5 points, followed by Lake Erie (114.5), Findlay (104), Glenville State (103.5), and Tiffin (96).

NOTABLES
- At 285 pounds, redshirt junior Ty Petrey finished in sixth place after medically forfeiting the fifth-place match. Petrey was 2-2 in matches contested on Saturday.
- Sophomore Walker Uhl, ranked No. 5 in D-II at 197 pounds, was injured during his quarterfinal match and lost by injury default, then it happened again in the consolation third round.
- Junior 125-pounder Tyler Masters (0-2), freshman 133-pounder Jeremiah McKee (0-2) and freshman 141-pounder Jacob Sundberg (0-2) all lost in the consolation third round.
