On Friday (Sept. 30) night, Genoa (Ohio) High School's football field will be renamed
Jim Firestone Field at GenoaBank Stadium, dedicated to the 1956 Ashland College graduate and 1993 Ashland University Hall of Famer.
Â
Firestone, an Eagle defensive back in the mid-1950s, was part of the first undefeated Ashland football team in 1954 (7-0), aptly named the "Hungry Hounds." He is a member of the Ashland College Football Dream Team, 1920-70, was a two-time All-Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference selection (1954-55), and the Hungry Hounds were inducted into the Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame.
Â
Firestone began at Genoa as a high school teacher and coach immediately after graduation from AC. He sported a record of 109-60-6 (.640) as the Comets' head football coach from 1959-76, and also served as high school principal for 11 years.
