Ashland University's track and field program lost its head coach,
Jud Logan, in January.
There may have been no better way to start the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday (March 11) in Pittsburg, Kan., than for one of Logan's pupils, senior
Brent Fairbanks, to win his first national championship.
Fairbanks won the national title in the men's weight throw in impressive fashion on Friday, as his top heave of 22.73 meters/74-feet-7 makes him the third-best in the event all-time indoors in D-II – trailing only former Eagles
Kibwe Johnson and
Ryan Loughney.
For Fairbanks, that also is his fifth All-American honor.
WHAT HAPPENED
- In the women's weight throw, senior Carrol Pauley got the Eagle women on the board with an eighth-place finish at 18.93 meters/62-feet-1¼. Pauley now is a three-time All-American.
- Ashland's men are in third place through Day 1 with 10 team points – trailing only Grand Valley State (15) and Colorado School of Mines (11).
- On the women's side, the Eagles are tied for 29th with one point.
- Freshman Sydney Koker finished in a tie for ninth place in the women's high jump at 1.70 meters/5-feet-7, sophomore Noah Koch was 15th in the men's weight throw at 18.61 meters/61-feet-0¾, and freshman Sarah Masuoka was 17th in the women's pole vault at 3.70 meters/12-feet-1½.
- In the first four events of the men's heptathlon, senior Travis Moore is 16th with 2,791 points.
