Ashland University senior swimmer
Matt Filsinger earned a place in Eagle athletics history on Saturday (Feb. 19).
Filsinger is the first Eagle student-athlete to earn the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Elite 25 Award. He was given his award prior to Saturday's finals in the fourth and final day of the 2022 Great Midwest Athletic Conference/Mountain East Championships in Canton, Ohio.
Filsinger had an undergrad cumulative grade-point average of 3.951 as an Economics major, and is in the AU online MBA program.
"Matthew wrapped the meet up with three B cuts, four PRs, and a fantastic run in the pool," noted Ashland head coach
Kyle Walthall. "In addition to his performances in the water, I cannot think of another athlete more deserving of the Elite 25 award, as he graduated early last year and is finishing his MBA this season."
Launched for the first time in the 2020-21 school year, the Great Midwest Elite 25 Award aims to recognize student-athletes at the pinnacle of their sport, both athletically and academically. Each sport is presented with one men's and women's individual winner with the highest cumulative GPA from a championship-qualifying program.
The honorees must also be actively able to compete on site, of sophomore eligibility and in at least their second year with their current institution. Each institution is permitted to nominate one male and one female student-athlete during the awards process that is mirrored specifically to the NCAA's Elite 90 Award.
Each eligible individual can receive the award up to one time during the current active academic year.
