No. 16 Eagle Grapplers Go 4-1 At Season-Starting Pioneer Duals

The 16th-ranked Ashland University wrestling team opened the 2022-23 season on Saturday (Nov. 5) with a 4-1 mark at Glenville State's Pioneer Duals.
 
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Ashland began the day with wins over Emory & Henry (58-0), Davis & Elkins (52-3), King (27-15) and Seton Hill (38-6), before losing the host Pioneers, 23-21.
  • Junior Drew Wiechers, the No. 3-ranked grappler in NCAA Division II at 165 pounds and Ashland's returning All-American from 2022, began his season at 2-0 following a pin and an 11-3 major decision. Sophomore Walker Uhl, ranked seventh at 197, ended the day at 5-0 with three pins.
  • Freshman Jeremiah McKee began his collegiate career with a 4-1 day with a pair of pins at 133, junior Gavin Weaver was 4-1 with two pins and two technical falls at 141, and junior Luke Wymer pinned both of his opponents at 149 on Saturday.
  • Another freshman Evan Davis, was 2-1 with a major decision at 149, while freshman Nate Barrett, splitting time between 174 and 184, was 4-0 with a pin, tech fall and major decision. Junior Ty Petrey ended the day at 4-1 with a pair of pins.
  • Junior Daniel Beemer, the No. 8-ranked wrestler at 184, did not compete on Saturday.
