Six Ashland University men's and women's swimmers got a jump on the 2021-22 season on Friday (Sept. 17) at the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Open Water Nationals in Lawrence, Kan.
WHAT HAPPENED
- Senior Matt Filsinger and junior Franci Aleksi were neck-and-neck on Friday, finishing in ninth (1:02:01.4) and 10th (1:02.04:3) place, respectively, in the men's 5,000-meter race. Sophomore Josh Hagan finished 25th in 1:07:06.6.
- Of the seven men's teams which had three performers, Ashland's squad took fourth place with 44 team points. Northern Michigan was first (15), followed by Emmanuel College (20) and Carson-Newman (22). The Wildcats' Zach Ondrej took top individual honors in 56:10.6.
- In the women's 5,000-meter race, senior Sydney Kermath led the Eagle effort, finishing in 1:10:36.5 and in 48th place. Senior Morgan Gardner was 64th in 1:14:09.4, while junior Kaci Agre was 69th in 1:16:48.1.
- Ashland's women were 15th in the team standings with 181 points. Nebraska was first (17), Rice second (31) and Purdue third (39). Purdue's Kate Beavon won the individual title in 1:03:09.6.
UP NEXT
Ashland's men and women will begin the full-team portion of their 2021-22 schedule on Oct. 2 at the Cleveland State Relay.
