The official start of Great Midwest Athletic Conference play for Ashland University's football team has been moved up by two days.
Ashland football's first Great Midwest game, at Walsh, has gone from Oct. 2 to Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at Canton GlenOak High School. The game is Walsh's Homecoming contest, and GlenOak's football field, the Cavaliers' temporary home while an on-campus stadium is being constructed, was unavailable on Oct. 2.
The all-time series between Ashland and Walsh is 6-0 in favor of the Eagles, including 3-0 on the road.
Ashland will celebrate its first 100 years of football this fall, and will open the 2021 season on Sept. 4 at noon at Notre Dame College. AU will play its home opener on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. vs. Ferris State, and that game will have several activities featuring and commemorating the first century of Ashland College/University football.
From 1920-2019, Ashland football boasted 505 wins, three undefeated seasons, two more undefeated regular seasons, 16 conference championships, seven NCAA Division II postseason appearances, two College Football Hall of Famers, 18 first-team All-Americans, 95 total All-Americans, 19 Academic All-Americans, four players drafted in the National Football League Draft and nine players who have played in an NFL regular-season game.
The 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
