Ashland University's women's and men's tennis teams very much found the Deborah Liebert Karl Tennis Complex to their liking on Saturday (March 27), as both Eagle squads defeated Davenport in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches.
The Eagle women improved to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC following a 5-2 win over the Panthers, and the AU men now are 4-4, 1-2, after their 4-3 squeaker past DU. With both the men and women playing the conference championship season in the spring this year, this is the first time both Ashland teams have played a GLIAC match at home on the same day since the recent resurrection of the men's program.
"I am very pleased with how we played in doubles, and really, our overall performance today with both teams," said Ashland director of tennis operations
Tim Dunford.
In the women's match, Ashland won four of six singles matches and all three doubles contests. The singles wins came from junior
Huntyr Lake at No. 3 (6-1, 6-3), sophomore
Zoe Rosu at No. 4 (6-2, 6-2), senior
Anna Hart at No. 5 (6-2, 6-3), and sophomore
Kristyn Conrad at No. 6 (6-2, 6-2).
Doubles pairings for the AU women were junior
Gabriella Hudec and senior
Camille Ringot at No. 1 (6-2), Lake and Hart at No. 2 (6-1), and Rosu and Conrad at No. 3 (6-1).
The men's match saw the Eagles take three of six singles matches, and earn the doubles point with wins in two of three matchups.
Ashland's singles triumphs came from junior
Stuart Brdicka at No. 1 (7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-5), senior
Priyank Soni at No. 2 (6-3, 7-5), and junior
Tche Kun Teng at No. 5 (7-5, 4-6, 6-2), and the doubles victories were earned by junior
Jordan Phelps and Teng at No. 2 (6-2), and sophomore
Jacob Hoffman and freshman
Grant Marzio at No. 3 (7-5).
"Pulling out the win the way they did was pretty spectacular," Dunford said of Hoffman and Marzio. "We definitely need those doubles points moving forward.
"I'm very excited at the fact that Terrence (Teng) was able to mentally hold it together and end that match the way that he did."
Ashland's men and women will return to the courts on Friday (April 2) at Michigan Tech.
