The 42
nd Midwest Classic started on Saturday (Dec. 18) in Indianapolis, Ind., and the No. 8-ranked Ashland University wrestling team ended Day 1 in eighth place in the 42-team field.

Ashland has 45.5 team points following Saturday's action. Central Oklahoma leads the field (71.5), followed by Parkside (57.0), Colorado Mesa (55.5), McKendree (50.5), Indianapolis (47.0), Mary (47.0) and Findlay (46.5).

WHAT HAPPENED
- Three Eagles are through to the Midwest Classic semifinals – junior 165-pounder Drew Wiechers, junior 174-pounder Daniel Beemer and senior 184-pounder Aidan Pasiuk. All three went 3-0 on Saturday, with Wiechers picking up a pin and a major decision, Beemer earning a major decision, and Pasiuk winning by major decision twice and by pin once.
- Senior Carson Speelman is in the consolation bracket after going 4-1 with two major decisions at 149 pounds, and sophomore Walker Uhl will move to the consolation bracket after going 2-1 with a major decision, but losing in the quarterfinal, at 197 pounds.
- Also on Saturday, freshman 125-pounder Nicholas Barber was 1-2, as were sophomore 133-pounder Tyler Masters and senior 141-pounder Justin Wilcox. Both senior 157-pounder Chance Esmont and junior 285-pounder Ty Petrey finished at 0-2.
