It didn't take long for Ashland University's wrestling team to assert itself in the 2021-22 season.

Opening the new campaign on Saturday (Nov. 6) at the Mount Union Invitational, the No. 7-ranked Eagles won the 10-team tournament. With 188.5 team points, AU outpaced the host Purple Raiders (140) and third-place Ohio Northern (124.5).

WHAT HAPPENED
- Five Eagles won individual bracket championships on Saturday. At 149 pounds, senior Carson Speelman went 5-0 with a pin, two technical falls and two major decisions. At 165, junior Drew Wiechers also was 5-0, picking up a pin, tech fall and major decision along the way.
- Junior Daniel Beemer was 4-0 at 174 pounds with a major decision, senior Aidan Pasiuk was 4-0 with two pins and a major decision at 184, and sophomore Walker Uhl was 4-0 with two tech falls at 197.
- A runner-up placement was earned by senior Chance Esmont at 157 pounds (3-1, pin, major decision), while finishing third were sophomore Gavin Weaver at 133 (4-1, three pins), junior Luke Wymer at 141 (4-1, pin), sophomore Jesse Bowers at 149 (4-1, four pins, tech fall), junior Nick Carbone at 157 (4-1, three major decisions), and senior Cameron Jenkins at 165 (5-1, major decision).
