Wayne State scored the final 13 points on Tuesday (Jan. 26) night to beat the Ashland University men's basketball team, 58-50, at the Matthaei Center in Detroit.
The Eagles (4-4, 4-3 GLIAC) saw their three-game winning streak snapped as the Warriors (4-3, 4-3 GLIAC) pulled even in the GLIAC standings.
Ashland led by as many as nine points with 7:32 to play after a couple free throws by sophomore guard
Ethan Conley gave the Eagles a 47-38 lead.
Wayne State then went on a 7-0 run before senior wing
Aaron Thompson converted a three-point play to push the Eagles' advantage to 50-45 with 4:29 left.
That would be the last time Ashland would score as WSU held the visitors to 0-for-8 shooting down the stretch with three turnovers. The Warriors went 4-for-4 in the last four minutes and 5-for-7 from the line.
Thompson was the Eagles' main threat in the first half, scoring 12 of his team-high 12 points before halftime as the Eagles took a 25-23 lead into the break. They led by as many as eight after Thompson's basket with two minutes left in the first half, but the hosts scored the last six points of the period.
In the second half, senior guard
Bo Furcron provided the main scoring punch with 10 of his 15 points coming in the last 20 minutes.
Wayne State held Ashland to 35 percent (20-for-48) shooting and WSU held a 41-29 edge on the glass.
Darian Owens-White led the Warriors with 23 points and five rebounds while Antonio Marshall had 11 points, eight rebounds and five blocks.
Thompson and Furcron were the only Eagles in double figures as sophomore guard
Brandon Haraway added seven points and seven rebounds.
The Eagles will look to regroup for a return trip to Michigan on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 29-30) when they play Davenport in Grand Rapids.
