The standards set by Ashland University's athletic department in the classroom get higher and higher every year.
As announced by the Division 2 Athletics Directors Association (D2 ADA) on Thursday (Aug. 27) afternoon, 119 Eagle student-athletes garnered 2019-20 D2 ADA Academic Achievement Awards. Leading the way were the football and women's track and field/cross country programs with 16 honorees each, followed by men's soccer (14) and women's soccer (13).
The Academic Achievement Awards, in its 13th year, is a program that recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at the Division II level.
A total of 15,215 student-athletes from 200 institutions were recognized for the 2019-20 Academic Achievement Awards. In order for a student-athlete to receive an Academic Achievement Award, the Director of Athletics of the Division II institution must be a current dues-paying member of the D2 ADA. Also, the student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, have attended a minimum of two years (four semesters) of college level work, and have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last academic year.
Ashland's total exceeds the 2018-19 mark of 100 student-athlete honors, the 2017-18 standard of 82 student-athletes lauded, and the 2016-17 total of 76. The Eagles' 2019-20 mark also is the second-highest in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, behind only Wayne State's 127.
