The Ashland University women's tennis team swept doubles play to earn the crucial point, then split singles play with in-region opponent McKendree to take a 4-3 win over the Bearcats on Thursday (March 5) afternoon at Lakewood Racquet Club in Lexington, Ohio.
The Eagles (11-12) have now won two in a row and are 2-2 in the spring season. This was their final match before heading to South Carolina for spring break.
The pairing of junior Anna Hart and junior Hazuki Ogino was triumphant at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, and junior Camille Ringot and senior Allison Brooks won at No. 2 doubles, 7-5. The Eagles won by forfeit in the final doubles position.
Ringot and Hart dropped very close matches at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, each going to a third set tiebreak.
The deciding wins came at Nos. 4 and 5 singles. Ogino defeated Bailee Wilson at No. 4 with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 final. Freshman Kristyn Conrad topped Anna Marison in straight sets at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0. Ashland won by forfeit the final singles spot.
The Eagles will now head to Columbia, S.C. for their next match against Benedict on Sunday (March 8).
