Ashland University's men's and women's swimming and diving teams lost their home opener on Saturday (Nov. 2) against Case Western Reserve.
Case Western beat the Eagles, 178-119, in women's competition, and 196-102 on the men's side.
Ashland's women started the day with a win in the 400-yard medley relay. Freshmen Sydney Kermath, Makayla Tarkenton and Gabby Bess, and sophomore Abigail Ellsworth won with a time of 4:09.90, earning 11 early points for the Eagles.
Ellsworth won in her next event as well, the 200-yard freestyle, with a time of 1:59.12. Jessica Zaper, junior, had the fastest time in the 50-yard free (25.25) just .19 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Sophomore Michaela Godfrey won the women's 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 2:09.39.
In women's diving, it was freshman Madison Jarrett who took the top score in the one-meter dive, 235.12. Jarrett also won the three-meter dive for Ashland (209.17), beating teammate, senior Madeline Cronin (203.85).
Sophomore Franci Aleksi was the first to win an event for Ashland in the men's competition. Aleksi won the 1,000-yard free by a significant margin as he finished in 9:49.26, 29 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher at 10:18.46. Freshman Amar Sapcanin was the fastest male in the field in the 100-yard back, as he won with the only time sub-1:00, 58.32. Sapcanin continued his great day, winning the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:07.16.
In the 500-yard free, sophomore Matt Filsinger (4:48.38) edged out Aleksi (4:48.59) by narrow margins. Filsinger also won the 400-yard individual medley for Ashland's men in 4:14.90.
The Eagles will compete next at home on Friday (Nov. 8) against Wayne State at 6 p.m.
