In a mid-week Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday (April 12) in Allendale, Mich., Ashland University's baseball team lost 8-2 and 14-5 to Grand Valley State.
The Eagles are 12-22 overall and 5-13 in the GLIAC, while the Lakers are 19-13, 7-7.
The opener was decided in the first inning, as GVSU scored five times. Three of those runs were unearned thanks to three Eagle errors.
Ashland countered with two runs in the top of the third on back-to-back RBI hits from junior second baseman Edmond Pilolli (triple) and freshman left fielder Vince Vanata (single). The Lakers, however, came back with two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to end the scoring.
Vanata was 2-for-3 with an RBI to pace Ashland's offense. Senior left-handed pitcher Mike Gentile (3-7) took the loss after allowing eight hits, seven runs (two earned) and one walk and striking out six in five innings.
In Game 2, the Lakers also ran out to an early lead with two runs in the first before Ashland scored in the top of the third on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of freshman center fielder Michael Rogers.
Grand Valley State put up four more innings of crooked numbers in the fourth (three runs), sixth (two), seventh (two) and eighth (five). The Eagles scored three times in the seventh on home runs from junior right fielder Connor Barleben (solo) and freshman third baseman Kevin Browne (two-run).
Ashland's run in the eighth came courtesy of an RBI groundout from junior first baseman Greg Ludwig.
Rogers and Browne each had two hits, and Browne also scored twice and drove in two runs.
Sophomore righty Sam Rice (2-5) started and lost, giving up six hits, five runs and two walks and whiffing one in 3 1/3 innings.
For GVSU in the nightcap, Anthony Villar was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and four RBIs.
