It was anything but a garden-variety doubleheader for Ashland University's softball team on Wednesday (March 29) at Malone.

The Eagles swept the Pioneers, 9-1 in six innings and 6-0, to move above the .500 mark at 14-13. The headline of the twinbill, however, was the perfect game twirled by sophomore pitcher Hannah Stroe in Game 2.

Stroe improved to 5-6 with her second consecutive victory and her fourth complete game of 2017 by sitting down all 21 Pioneers (7-11-1). She struck out three, induced 14 groundouts and got four fly outs.

Ashland and Stroe got the only runs they would need in the nightcap in the top of the first inning, as sophomore second baseman Paige Summers hit a two-run double. After a run in the third, the Eagles finished the scoring with a three-spot in the fourth on an RBI single by senior center fielder Ally Farrah, a steal of home by sophomore right fielder Kayla Troyer and a Summers RBI single.

While Stroe was shutting down Malone, Ashland collected 13 hits, three each from Farrah and Summers. Farrah scored three times, and Summers drove in four runs and rapped two doubles. Sophomore first baseman Kylie Asmus and sophomore designated player Halle Dorko each collected two hits.

In Wednesday's opener, the Eagles stopped the game an inning early thanks to a run in the third, two in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the sixth. The big AU hits were a two-run single by Farrah in the fifth and a two-run single by sophomore pitcher Abbie Sgro in the sixth.

Farrah was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Asmus was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI and freshman catcher Cassie Haight had a 2-for-4 game.

The doubleheader sweep gives Ashland a 7-3 record in its 10 games since returning from the annual Florida spring trip.

UP NEXT: A home Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday (April 1) at noon vs. Northwood.
