Opening up 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Sunday (March 19) at Findlay, Ashland University's baseball team split a doubleheader with the Oilers, losing the opener 4-3 in eight innings before coming back with a 2-0 win in the nightcap.

In Game 2, the Eagles (7-10 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) rode the arms of junior right-hander Pat Carlozzi and sophomore righty Ryan Curtis to victory. Carlozzi (1-1) earned the victory with 4 2/3 innings of shutout pitching, allowing two hits and two walks and striking out five. Curtis picked up the save, his second, thanks to 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts and just two hits allowed.

The only runs of the second game came in the top of the second inning, when sophomore catcher Jacob Garbarino was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and senior center fielder Carsten Dembeck drew a walk with the bags packed.

In the opener, Ashland spotted the Oilers (10-2, 1-1) three runs in the first two innings, then worked to tie the game at 3 through 6½. In the top of the fifth, senior pinch-hitter Lance Myers' RBI single made it a 3-1 game. Then, in the top of the seventh, junior first baseman Greg Ludwig launched a two-run home run to knot the game.

Findlay scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a one-out RBI single by Derrick Herd.

Sophomore righty Chris Slavik struck out 10 and allowed seven hits, three runs and three walks in six innings, and the loss went to another sophomore righty, Sam Rice (1-1), who allowed the unearned run in the eighth. Rice struck out two, walked two and yielded three hits in 1 1/3 frames.

UP NEXT: Finishing the four-game set at Findlay with a twinbill on Tuesday (March 21) at 2 p.m.
