Completing its four-game weekend set in Nashville, Tenn., Ashland University's baseball team (2-2) split a doubleheader with Alderson Broaddus on Sunday (Feb. 26), winning 13-2 and losing 11-0.
In the opening-game victory, the Eagles led 5-2 before exploding for eight runs in the top of the seventh. Senior shortstop Brad Hartman hit a two-run home run, freshman third baseman Evan Lee had an RBI double, sophomore catcher Jacob Garbarino collected a two-run single and RBI hits were turned in by junior left fielder Greg Ludwig, freshman center fielder Mac Schoenman and junior second baseman J.P. Sorma.
Sorma was 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs to lead Ashland's 18-hit attack, while Hartman was 3-for-4 with a triple, the homer, two runs scored and two RBIs. Garbarino drove in three runs, freshman designated hitter Carson Mittermaier was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs and Ludwig was 2-for-3.
Sophomore right-hander Sam Rice earned his first win of the season, pitching 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. He allowed two hits and no walks and struck out two.
In the loss in the nightcap, the Eagles managed just three hits, as the Battlers' Zach Salmon authored a complete-game three-hit shutout. Salmon struck out six and walked two.
The loss was hung on junior right-hander Jordan Young, who allowed four hits, five runs (one earned) and two walks while striking out one in two innings.
UP NEXT: The start of the annual Florida spring break trip on Friday (March 3) at 11 a.m. vs. Kentucky Wesleyan.
