Baseball Splits At Walsh For Second Day In A Row

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Ashland University's baseball team split a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division doubleheader at Walsh on Sunday (April 24) for the second day in a row, winning 11-2 and losing 22-10.

The Eagles, who continue to lead the South by a game over Malone and the entire league by a game over Grand Valley State, are 25-14 overall, 16-4 in the conference and 12-2 in the division. The Cavaliers are 20-20/11-9/8-6.

Sunday's first game was all Ashland from pitch No. 1. An RBI single by sophomore left fielder Greg Ludwig put the Eagles ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning, then a three-run home run from junior catcher Adam Vasil in the second made it a 4-0 score.

Ahead 4-1 through four innings, Ashland put up two more crooked numbers to finish the victory – four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. The fifth-inning highlight was a three-run shot by senior first baseman Mackenzie Hampshire.

Senior right-handed pitcher Jake Baldwin returned to the mound for the first time since March 4, and went three innings. Baldwin (3-0) allowed four hits and a run and struck out four. The save went to freshman righty Sam Rice, who yielded three hits, a run and two walks and struck out four in four innings.

Senior right fielder Mike Lewandowski and Ludwig each had three of AU's 13 hits, and Hampshire drove in four runs.

Of the 79 runs scored in the four-game series, 32 came across in Game 2. The Cavaliers took the lead for good with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, which broke a 10-10 tie.

Freshman second baseman Cameron Nunn was 4-for-4, Ludwig was 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBIs, sophomore third baseman J.P. Sorma was 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs and junior designated hitter Lance Myers was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Junior righty Mitch Cox (0-1) took the loss after giving up four unearned runs, one hit and three walks and striking out two in 2/3 of an inning.

Ashland will complete its 11-game road trip with a non-conference game at Cedarville (13-22) on Tuesday (April 26) at 4 p.m. On March 22 at Donges Field, the Eagles defeated the Yellow Jackets, 26-2.
